Another ‘Institute of Quarrying 40 year Milestone’ reached!!

Leiths

Leiths are delighted to announce that Norman Phillips, Quarry Manager at our Bluehill Quarry in Moray, has reached 40 years service in the quarrying industry and has been awarded a personally engraved silver Institute of Quarrying medal.

Norman started his working life in Aberdeen with Barry Hendry & Cook (which later became Seaforth Maritime ) as an Engineering Apprentice, moving to the drawing office to complete his qualifications. In 1974, he moved to Parkmore Quarry at Dufftown, owned at the time by RHM as a Trainee Manager where he learned his skills from the ground up, but primarily in the operation and maintenance side of the business. During this period, Norman attended Doncaster College on block release to attain the necessary qualifications.

On completion of his studies, Norman was made Assistant Manager and in 1981 took on the role of Manager.  The quarry had, by then, changed ownership to Dalgety Agriculture and in 1988 Leiths became the new owner of Parkmore and modernisation was put into place with aggregate and coated products added to the production facility.  At this point, Norman was given the additional responsibility of being in charge of the companies blasting programme which has covered all sites as the company has expanded.

In 1993 Norman left Leiths to expand his career, however, returned in 1995 as Quarry Manager for Bluehills.  The rest, as they say, is history!

We would like to acknowledge Norman‘s efforts during his time at Leiths and for reaching such a milestone within the quarrying industry.
